A year round youth basketball development program dedicated to helping young players advance their skills and learn how to compete at higher levels.  The program includes different skill based levels within age groups; supervised staff coaches; multiple practices per week; and game competition in community leagues and tournaments.

2024 Fall Season

Boys Teams - 3rd-9th grades and Girls Teams - 3rd-8th grades
Multiple teams may be formed within a grade level and grades may be combined as determined appropriate.  Tryouts will be held in the Fall and Spring and used to determine player placement.  Not all those who tryout are likely to make a team.  The J also offers Spring and Summer Skill Clinics for those who do not make a Triple Threat team or who choose to participate in a clinic instead of trying out for a team.

Team Levels
Triple Threat Blue - our most advanced teams.  These teams will play against high level local competition and players are expected to be committed to their team's schedule.  The Fall Season begins the week of August 19 and runs through the end of October/first weekend in November.  Blue level teams will play 12-14 games during the Fall season. Teams may stay together in the Winter depending on player availability.  A Spring/Summer season takes place March-June.

Triple Threat Red - these teams are for those at an intermediate skill level and teams will compete in local leagues or tournaments determined to be at the appropriate competitive level.  Please know that it is possible for teams to face higher level teams depending on game play options. The Fall Season begins the week of August 19 and runs through the end of October.  The Red level teams will play 7-10 games during the Fall season. Teams may stay together in the Winter depending on player availability.  A Spring/Summer season takes place March-June. 

Season Schedule
Tryouts:  August 12-15 (specific schedule to be announced)
Notifications: August 16-18
Practices Begin: The week of August 19; each team will practice twice per week most weeks
Game Play: Games will be played on weekends beginning in early September.
Season ends: late October or early November (8th grade boys season will end in mid December)

Tryouts
All tryouts take place at The J at 5801 West 115th Street in Overland Park, KS.  There is no charge to tryout but pre-registration is required.  Each age group has two tryout sessions.  Players are encouraged, although not required, to attend both tryout sessions.  Not all those who tryout for a team are likely to make a team.  The J also offers Fall Skill Clinics for those who do not make a Triple Threat team or who choose to participate in a clinic instead of trying out for a team.

Practice and Game Locations
The Triple Threat program uses school gyms within 10-15 minutes of The J for most team practices.  Some teams may practice at The J but this is not the case for all teams.  Games are generally played at gyms in the Shawnee Mission School District although teams may play games throughout the Greater Kansas City metro area and even as far away as Lawrence, Kansas although this is the exception not the norm. 

Program Fees for August - October (includes coaches fees, court fees, team tournament/league registration fees)
$295 or $225 for J members
(8th grade boys fees will be $75 higher to account for their longer season)

$60 uniform package fee for new players - includes jersey, short and shooting shirt - uniforms may be reused from one season to the next

Meet Jason Sautter, Manager of Youth Basketball Programs at The J
Jason Sautter, our youth basketball program manager comes to The J after decades of coaching and being an administrator at multiple levels including professional, college, high school, and youth basketball. In his career he has been blessed to coach 149 Division I players, 90 professionals, and has been a part 9 championship teams. Jason is married with three children and has a M. Ed. from Harding University.


Triple Threat Basketball
Winter 2024-25
October 28, 2024 - March 2, 2025

The Triple Threat program is for those looking for a more competitive option than our Skill Builders program.  The J will form 1-2 teams per grade level. Teams are coached by J staff coaches. Teams play in a local league against other teams from the community.

For the Winter season, teams are formed from those who played on a Triple Threat team in the Fall and from new players who participate in our tryout.  Team formation for the Spring/Summer seasons will take place in March.

Please review the schedule below carefully for date, time and location.  Note - the school gyms for the 6 pm start times do not open their doors until 6 pm or just a few minutes before.

5th grade boys - Tuesday, October 8 from 7:30-9 pm at Trailwood Elementary School

3rd grade girls - Monday, October 7 from 6-7:30 pm at Brookwood Elementary School
4th/5t grade girls - Tuesday, October 8 from 6-7:30 pm at Brookwood Elementary School
6th grade girls - Tuesday, October 8 from 7:30-9 pm at Brookwood Elementary School

Registration for the tryout is required - no fees are collected until after a player has been placed on a team.  Placement notifications and practice schedules will be sent out by the end of the day on October 11.  Practices may be held at The J or offsite at 96th and Lamar or 99th and Antioch.

Program Fees: $475 / $395 with J membership discount
Fees include - one practice per week, league fees and coaching fees
Uniform Fee: $60 for those who do not have a Triple Threat uniform - shorts, jersey and shooter's shirt
